Initiative Details

According to Daily Pennsylvanian, the community fridge initiative features a full-size refrigerator, pantry and deep freezer stocked with fresh produce, dairy products, dry goods and more. It’s the first program of its kind in the Chester area.

Official Launch

On May 4th, the official unveiling day, Chester residents were able to pick up a variety of free foods like grapes, avocados, oat milk, pasta sauce and dry pasta. A farmers’ market was also held on-site.

Keeping the Fridge Stocked

Keeping the fridge fully stocked is a team effort. Sharing Excess, a food rescue organization, facilitates donations of surplus food from retailers and directly donated items. Since 2018, they’ve rescued an impressive 41 million pounds of food that would have otherwise gone to waste.

Role of Philadelphia Union

The Philadelphia Union is integral to the initiative as well. They will organize volunteer opportunities for fans to donate food and earn rewards. The team also supplements stock through partner donations. Penn Medicine staff can sign up for volunteer days to help keep the pantry shelves full.

Accessibility and Operation

The no-questions-asked policy makes the community fridge accessible to anyone facing hunger or food insecurity. It will be open weekdays from 10am to 7pm, providing a reliable source of nourishment.

Boys & Girls Club of Chester

The Boys & Girls Club hosting the fridge is a Chester-based nonprofit dedicated to guiding local youth. They offer mentorship, career development, athletics and work to prevent substance abuse.
