By all accounts, Zykier was a kind young man who brought joy to those around him. He leaves behind grieving family and friends whose lives are forever changed. Though no words can ease their pain, the community wraps its arms around them, offering comfort and support during this difficult time. Zykier’s bright light may be gone too soon, but his memory lives on in the hearts of many. In this article we talk about Police Identify Teen Victim and Offer $5K Reward for Carnival Murder near Delaware Mall.

Fatal Shooting at Delaware Carnival

A night of family fun at a carnival turned deadly when shots rang out in the parking lot of the Concord Mall in Wilmington, Delaware. On May 11, 2024 at approximately 10:45 p.m., a fight broke out among carnival goers at the L.E.A.D. Fest Carnival, leading to gunfire. 16-year-old Zykier Flowers sustained fatal injuries, while a 17-year-old was seriously wounded but survived.

The carnival was organized by local non-profit L.E.A.D. (Leading Every Adult and Child to Destiny) and held in a parking area across from the Concord Mall on 4737 Concord Pike. The mall and carnival property are managed by the Allied Retail Properties.

L.E.A.D. works to mentor youth and bring families together through free community events. The multi-day carnival was scheduled to conclude on Sunday, but organizers made the decision to close early following the shooting.

In a Facebook statement, L.E.A.D. conveyed condolences and said they were cooperating fully with state police as the investigation continues. Delaware State Police have not released details about potential suspects or motives.

Remembering Zykier Flowers

Zykier Flowers, just 16 years young, had his entire life ahead of him. He was tragically robbed of that future in an act of violence that shattered his family and community.

Friends describe Zykier as a jokester who loved making people laugh. Teachers recalled his intelligence and potential, saying he was on the honor roll despite significant challenges in his personal life. His youth football coaches called him a talented athlete and a joy to be around.

Zykier’s family is reeling from the painful loss of their beloved son and brother. His mother spoke of her son’s big heart for others, a heart that stopped beating far sooner than it should have. She pleads for anyone with information to come forward so that Zykier’s killer can be brought to justice.

Though he was just a teenager, Zykier clearly impacted many lives in his community. His tragic murder has left a hole that can never be filled.

The Search for Answers and Justice

Delaware State Police are actively investigating the carnival shooting with help from the Wilmington Police Department and the Delaware Department of Justice. They are searching for clues and appealing to witnesses to piece together the deadly altercation.

Detective Brian McDerby is leading the investigation. He asks that anyone who saw the fight, gunfire, or the individual responsible to contact him directly through the channels below:

  • Call 302-741-2821
  • Email brian.mcderby@delaware.gov
  • Private message Delaware State Police on Facebook
  • Call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333

Tipsters can remain anonymous when contacting Crime Stoppers or through Facebook. All information provided will assist detectives in making an arrest for Zykier’s murder.

Additionally, Delaware Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment. Detective McDerby implores witnesses to come forward for the sake of Zykier’s grieving family seeking justice and closure.

Could More Have Been Done?

The question on the minds of many in the community is whether the shooting could have somehow been prevented. L.E.A.D. organizers assured that they had strict security at entry points to the carnival grounds. Attendees reported bag checks and a presence of armed security personnel.

However, according to witnesses, there were not enough security guards actively patrolling the carnival perimeter and adjoining parking areas. Fights have been known to break out in these areas at other public events nationwide.

Some feel the violence reflects larger societal issues beyond the control of L.E.A.D. or the carnival itself. Others argue more stringent safety measures could have been in place, like police patrols, more security, and emergency response protocols.

Ultimately, the gunman who opened fire is responsible for heartlessly cutting two young lives short. The community continues banding together to heal and create a safer, more just world for youth like Zykier.

Continuing Zykier’s Legacy

The loss of such a promising young community member has mobilized citizens to take action. Neighborhood groups are hosting peace rallies, local leaders are demanding change, and police are enhancing their presence at events involving youth.

Several youth organizations have dedicated community service events in Zykier’s name. They hope to continue his legacy by standing up against violence and being the change they want to see. A candlelight vigil also brought hundreds together in solemn remembrance.

While nothing can fill the void left by Zykier’s passing, many are trying to find meaning in the senseless tragedy. Zykier’s family and friends endeavor to honor his memory by helping young people in need of support and guidance.

If any good can come from this devastating loss, perhaps it will be preventing similar violence and creating a better, safer community for the next generation. Zykier Flowers’ light may have dimmed too soon, but it continues to inspire others. May his memory live on as a catalyst for positive change.
