As summer warmth returns to Philadelphia, one of the city’s most vibrant and highly anticipated events is making its annual comeback. The legendary ODUNDE Festival renowned as the nation’s largest African American cultural street festival will take over South Street and Greys Ferry Avenue on June 9th, 2024. In this article we talk about ODUNDE Festival Returns to Philadelphia.

Sprawling across over 15 city blocks this iconic Philadelphia tradition promises a day overflowing with the sights, sounds and flavors of the African diaspora. From hundreds of crafts and food vendors lining the streets to electrifying live performances on multiple stages ODUNDE immerses attendees in the rich heritage of African and African American culture.

But the festivities extend far beyond just the one-day street fair. According to NBC Philadelphia, ODUNDE organizers have packed an entire week of events and activities from June 2nd through June 8th to kick off the celebrations early.

Embracing Mind, Body and Spirit

The ODUNDE lineup reflects the festival’s holistic celebration of African traditions touching on wellness, education, entrepreneurship and more. Highlights include:

Yoga in Love Park: Start the week centered and grounded with outdoor yoga sessions embracing African spiritual philosophies.

Leader Roundtables: Engage with prominent voices from the African and Caribbean diasporas through panel discussions on topics like activism politics and community development.

Africa Business Lectures: For the entrepreneurially-minded don’t miss lectures providing insights into conducting business across the African continent.

And that’s just a taste of the many enriching experiences filling the week leading up to the iconic street festival on June 9th.

A Lasting Legacy Born in South Philadelphia

When ODUNDE founders Lois Fernandez and Mbata Pekounden launched the first festival back in 1975 they had modest ambition and a budget of just $100. By tapping into the civic pride of the South Philadelphia community these visionary African cultural activists steadily grew ODUNDE into a world-renowned juggernaut.

Today, the festival attracts nearly 500,000 attendees each year from across the region and around the globe. This incredible turnout generate millions of dollar in revenue for local businesses and the city’s economy.

Beyond the numbers, ODUNDE significance runs even deeper as a rallying point for celebrating African heritage and promoting unity within Philadelphia’s vibrant Black community. As Fernandez has stated “ODUNDE demonstrates cooperation. It pulls people from all walks of life together.”

An Unmissable Philadelphia Experience

With its dazzling array of vendors pulsating music and dance performances, mouthwatering African cuisine and activities suited for all ages ODUNDE truly offers something for everyone. But at its core this treasured annual tradition provides a platform to honor the indelible influences of African culture on Philadelphia and the world at large.

Whether you’re a lifelong Philadelphia resident or visiting the city stepping into the energizing atmosphere of ODUNDE is an essential slice of the local experience – one that will leave you feeling inspired and connected to the African roots woven into the fabric of this diverse community.
