Announcement of the Scholarship Campaign

According to People, On June 7th, Roc Nation announced an educational campaign focused on securing scholarships for underprivileged K-12 students in Philadelphia. The goal is to help students from low-income families gain access to the city’s private schools to the tune of $300 million in scholarships.

Funding Through the PASS Program

Roc Nation is funding the initiative through Pennsylvania’s PASS program (Pennsylvania Award for Student Success), which aims to increase educational opportunities for students attending the state’s lowest-performing public schools. The scholarships will be awarded based on financial need, with eligibility requirements capping household income at 250% of federal poverty levels. For a family of four, that threshold stands at $75,000 annually.

Scholarship Amounts and Distribution

Scholarship amounts will range from $2,500 for half-day kindergarteners and $5,000 for K-8 students to $10,000 for high schoolers and $15,000 for special needs pupils. “We want to empower the youth and families with the knowledge to pursue their scholastic dreams, make their voices heard and become the leaders of tomorrow,” said Roc Nation Managing Director of Philanthropy Dania Diaz.

JAY-Z’s Connection to Philadelphia

JAY-Z has enjoyed a long-running “special connection” with the City of Brotherly Love through the annual Made in America festival launched there in 2012. The event is currently on hold but made waves over its first five years for promoting reform and social justice alongside music. Additionally, Roc Nation has partnered with Philadelphia’s REFORM Alliance organization over the past half-decade to transform the state’s criminal justice system through impactful legislation.

From June 10-21, Roc Nation will host a series of local events to spread awareness of the PASS scholarships available to qualifying students.
