As additional information comes to light, investigators are piecing together the harrowing events that transpired after officers approached the driver, 36-year-old Ramon Rodriguez Vazquez. Vazquez now faces a slew of charges, including two counts of attempted murder of a police officer.

The Traffic Stop That Sparked Violence

Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore provided an overview of the initial traffic stop at a press conference. Officers pulled over Vazquez’s Toyota on the 35000 block of Epps Street after noticing the missing plates.

According to FOX29, upon approaching the vehicle, officers learned Vazquez did not have a valid driver’s license. They also discovered the Toyota was unregistered, which warranted a “live-stop” procedure to have the car towed and impounded.

Three of Vazquez’s acquaintances then arrived on the scene in a separate vehicle – two 33-year-old women and one 37-year-old man. According to investigators, these individuals stayed for the roughly 30-minute traffic stop and helped remove items from the Toyota as officers prepared to tow it.

The Discovery That Set Off a Violent Chain Reaction

As officers conducted an inventory search of Vazquez’s vehicle, a chilling discovery escalated tensions – an empty gun holster laying on the floorboards. When questioned about it, authorities say Vazquez began to flee the area on foot.

“Without provocation,” Vazquez then fired three gunshots towards the two officers, striking one in the neck. The 31-year-old officer and 6-year department veteran was rushed to Temple University Hospital by his partner.

A Dangerous Manhunt Ensues

What followed the shooting was a dangerous citywide search for the gunman. Investigators believe Vazquez first tried to change his shirt and hide in a nearby garage during the initial moments of his escape.

Soon after, officers swarmed the home Vazquez had entered. While barricaded inside, he allegedly tried arranging transportation to flee Philadelphia. Eventually, a SWAT team raided the home and took Vazquez into custody.

Officers discovered a Glock 26 9mm handgun in the residence – the suspected weapon used to shoot the police officer.

The Aftermath of the Violence

Vazquez now faces over a dozen charges for his alleged crimes, including multiple counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and firearms violations. He is being held on $12 million bail.

The wounded officer remains in “extremely critical condition” on a breathing machine according to Mayor Cherelle Parker. The Philadelphia community continues to stand behind the officer, his family, and the entire police department during this difficult time.

Commissioner Danielle Outlaw noted this incident marks the ninth officer shot in the line of duty since last May – a dire statistic that highlights increasing dangers for Philadelphia law enforcement.
